Kazansay Formation

Kazansay Fm

Period:
Devonian

Age Interval:
Eifelian, U5

Province:
Ustyurt-Sultanuzdag

Type Locality and Naming

Along Kazansay, Sultanuizdag Mountains. A team of geologists from the Uzbek Geological Management in 1958 (Alferov, Kulesh, 1965; 508, pp. 49-56).

Synonym: Kazansay Suite, Казансайская св.

Lithology and Thickness

Divided into three sub-suites.

Lower - calcareous-schistose (biotite)-quartz slates with thin layers of brownish-yellow-gray limestones. Thickness 60-70m.

Middle - at the bottom, thin interbedding of quartz-feldspar-biotite slates and marbled limestones (Thickness 35-45m), above - marbled limestones and marbles (Thickness 180m).

Upper - quartz-feldspar-biotite, two-mica, calcareous-schistose slates. Thickness 180m.

Lithology Pattern:
Claystone

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

The volume of the suite and its position in the section are interpreted differently. K.A. Keshishyan (1995) considers the contacts with the underlying Karakuduk Fm to be normally stratigraphic or unclear; Z.M. Abdurazimova - tectonic.

Upper contact

The volume of the suite and its position in the section are interpreted differently. K.A. Keshishyan (1995) considers the contacts with the overlying Beshmazar Fm to be normally stratigraphic or unclear; Z.M. Abdurazimova - tectonic.

Regional extent

Central and eastern parts of the Sultanuizdag ridge, to the south and north of the greenstone belt of the Karakuduk suite. V.V. Mikhailov (460) includes only the carbonate deposits with the fauna of the Lower-Middle Devonian in the K. suite, and the quartz-feldspar-biotite and other crystalline slates are assigned to the Sultanuizdag Gr of the provisional Proterozoic.

Age

Based on the fauna complex, the age of the suite can be interpreted in the interval of the Pridoli epoch of the Early Devonian - Middle Devonian, Givetian. In the Stratigraphic Lexicon (441), it is assigned to the Eifelian stage of the Middle Devonian.
